Park Cannon Knows She Doesn’t Look Like Your Typical Politician. That’s the Idea.

Cannon had always been an activist, formalizing the title when she was still in high school and cementing it as soon as she graduated from college and went to work at a woman’s health clinic. Since then, she’s worked at local non-profits to advocate for the communities with which she identifies—the LGBTQ community, African Americans, low-income residents. “I make the average amount of money that an average person makes in my district, which is $24,000,” she says. Her heroes are women like Maya Angelou and Shirley Chisholm—the first African American woman elected to Congress. (She posts a picture of Chisholm on her Facebook page on voting days.)
