Park Cannon Knows She Doesn’t Look Like Your Typical Politician. That’s the Idea.

Park Cannon Knows She Doesn’t Look Like Your Typical Politician. That’s the Idea.

Cannon had always been an activist, formalizing the title when she was still in high school and cementing it as soon as she graduated from college and went to work at a woman’s health clinic. Since then, she’s worked at local non-profits to advocate for the communities with which she identifies—the LGBTQ community, African Americans, low-income residents. “I make the average amount of money that an average person makes in my district, which is $24,000,” she says. Her heroes …

CNN: The queer black millennial who plans to shake up Georgia politics

CNN: The queer black millennial who plans to shake up Georgia politics
Cannon is young. She is a black woman. She is queer.
That’s what Democratic Rep. Karla Drenner said makes Cannon’s perspective special to the Georgia Democratic caucus.
“She definitely looks at the world differently than most members,” said Drenner, who is also an openly gay lawmaker. “The difference is that she identifies with the word ‘queer.’ I think that’s generated some discussion because a lot of members have no clue what ‘Q’ means.”

PROJECT Q ATLANTA: Queer candidate Park Cannon wins House race

Queer candidate Park Cannon wins House race

First-time queer candidate Park Cannon easily beat a former lawmaker on Tuesday and will soon become the third openly gay member of the Georgia House.

Cannon, 24, raised the most cash in the special election for the District 58 seat and topped two other candidates in the Jan. 19 race. But her margin of victory wasn’t large enough to avoid a runoff.

That came Tuesday and Cannon soundly defeated Ralph Long, 59 percent to 41 percent. Little more than 1,100 votes were …

SAPORTA REPORT: Every Election Matters. Go Vote.

SAPORTA REPORT: Every Election Matters. Go Vote.

A favorite event of voters is to ignore a special election. So it’s no surprise the recent election for state House District 58 barely registered in the hearts and minds of the electorate.

A January three-way race generated a measly 2.78 percent turnout. In a district of 30,162 voters, only 838 took a few minutes out of their day to cast a ballot, excluding provisional ballots – if any.

Park Cannon, the top vote getter, received 47.4 percent – not bad …
